| 41 | This ancestor is found in a marriage record between Hendrick Willemse Buijs and Aetgen Cornelis Becelle, 4 January, 1604, in the parish of Brielle, county of Zuid, Holland. The average marital age of brides in this time period was 20 to 23 years old. Men were either of the same age or slightly older. For the most part, younger marriages were not seen until the late 1800's to early 1900's. The Buijs' family lived and continued living in Brielle for many years and were members of the Dutch Reform Church. | BUIJS Hendrick Willemse

| 42 | Jan Cornelis Buijs was known as "The Soldier", and was our immigrant ancestor. He arrived in America in 1648 at 19 years of age, and settled in Long Island, New Amsterdam (New York). He married about 1651 and began a family. He took the Oath of Alliance to the crown in 1687. Jan was married three times and had a total of twelve children. We are desended from the first marriage to Eybe Lubbertse. Jan Cornelis was also known as Jan Damen. Jan Cornelis Buijs had an extremely wealthy uncle who was without children. The uncle, Jan Jansen Damen (his mother's brother), adopted his nephew and our Buijs/Buys ancestor became a wealthy man. Note that Jan (Jan Cornelis Buijs) Damen's children kept the surname, Buijs, as their inheritance came through their father's birth name. | BUIJS Jan Cornelis
